The University of Valencia stands as one of Spain’s leading universities, shaped by over five centuries of academic tradition and a wealth of historical documentation.
The roots of higher education in Valencia date back to 1245, when King James I of Aragon secured a Studium Generale from Pope Innocent IV. However, the University was formally established on 30 October 1499, when the Juries of Valencia drafted its founding Constitutions. Official recognition followed with a Papal Bull issued by Pope Alexander VI on 23 January 1501 and a royal privilege granted by Ferdinand II on 16 February 1502.
For more than 500 years, the University has evolved alongside the city, becoming an integral part of Valencia’s cultural and scientific landscape. Initially focused on medicine, humanities, theology, and law, it has undergone significant expansion and modernisation in the past two decades—transforming into a globally connected institution at the forefront of research and technology.
Today, the University of Valencia ranks among Spain’s top five scientific institutions, offering a comprehensive range of teaching and research across all major fields, including basic sciences, engineering, health sciences, education, humanities, social sciences, economics, and law. Its pursuit of excellence continues to drive innovation and global engagement.
